(/us/pl/74/257).] *Be it enacted1So in original. by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled*, That section 559District of Columbia Code, amendment. of title 20 of the Code of the District of Columbia be amended to read as follows: " Fire Department members.Residence requirement. “Restrictions on members of department leaving District; Leaves of absence.— No member of the fire department shall, unless on leave of absence, go beyond the confines of the District of Columbia, or be absent from duty without permission, except that nothing in this Act shall be construed to limit the right of members of the department to reside anywhere within the Washington, District of Columbia, Metropolitan District: and leaves of absenceLeave of absence. exceeding twenty days in any one year shall be without pay and require the consent of the Commissioners, and such year shall be from January 1 to December 31, both inclusive, and thirty days shallTerm of sick leave. be the term of total sick leave in any year without disallowance 568Extension authorized.of pay; and leave of absence with pay of members of the Fire Department of the District of Columbia may be extended in cases of illness or injury incurred in line of duty, upon recommendation of the board of surgeons approved by the Commissioners of the District of Columbia, for such period exceeding thirty days in any calendar year as in the judgment of the Commissioners may be necessary: *Proviso*.“Washington, District of Columbia, Metropolitan District”, determined. *Provided*, That for the purposes of this Act, Washington, District of Columbia, Metropolitan District, shall be held to include the District of Columbia and the territory adjacent thereto within a radius of twelve miles from the United States Capitol Building:Telephone requirement. *And provided further*, That any member of the fire department living outside the District of Columbia shall have and maintain a telephone at all times in his residence.

That section 483 of title 20 of the Code of the District of Columbia be amended to read as follows: " Residence, members of police force. “Residence of members of police force.— There shall be no limitation or restriction of place of residence to any member of the *Proviso*.“Washington, District of Columbia, Metropolitan District”, determined.police force, other than residence within the Washington, District of Columbia, metropolitan district: *Provided*, That for the purposes of this Act, Washington, District of Columbia, metropolitan district, shall be held to include the District of Columbia and the Telephone requirement.territory adjacent thereto within a radius of twelve miles from the United States Capitol Building: *And provided further*, That any member of the Police Department living outside of the District of Columbia shall have and maintain a telephone at all times in his residence.
