Section 2 of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 ( 52 U.S.C. 20501 ) is amended to read as follows: The purposes of this Act are to— protect the integrity of the electoral process; and to ensure that accurate and current voter registration rolls are maintained. . Section 8 of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 ( 52 U.S.C. 20507 ) is amended— by redesignating such section as section 4; by amending subsection
(a)to read as follows: In the administration of voter registration for elections for Federal office, each State shall— provide that the name of a registrant may not be removed from the official list of eligible voters except— at the request of the registrant; as provided by State law, by reason of criminal conviction or mental incapacity; or as provided under paragraph (2); and conduct a general program that makes a reasonable effort to remove the names of ineligible voters from the official lists of eligible voters by reason of— the death of the registrant; or a change in the residence of the registrant, in accordance with subsections (b), (c), and (d). ; in subsection (c)(1), by striking subsection (a)(4) and inserting subsection (a)(2) ; and in subsection (c)(2)(B)(i), by striking paragraph
(A)or
(B)or (4)(A) of subsection
(a)and inserting paragraph (1)(A) or
(B)or (2)(A) of subsection
(a). Section 10 of such Act ( 52 U.S.C. 20509 ) is redesignated as section 5. Section 12 of such Act ( 52 U.S.C. 20511 ) is redesignated as section 6.
