There is hereby appropriated $2,000,000, to remain available until expended, for the Secretary of Agriculture to carry out no more than 5 pilot projects, under the terms and conditions determined by the Secretary for a period not to exceed 3 years and without increasing household benefit allotments as authorized by section 8 of the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 ( 7 U.S.C. 2017 ), that allow the use of supplemental nutrition assistance program benefits to purchase only nutrient-dense foods and beverages (as defined in the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans), of which 1 or more of such projects shall be carried out before December 21, 2024.
Not later than 6 months after the first pilot project under subsection
(a)begins, the Secretary shall enter into a contract with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to— evaluate the pilot project or projects carried out under subsection (a); and provide the results of such evaluation not later than 18 months after the date of such contract.
