Sec. 1512. Study on most effective upgrades to roadway infrastructure

Not later than 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall offer to enter into an agreement with the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to conduct a study— to identify specific immediate and specific long-term types of improvements to roadway infrastructure that would benefit the largest segment of road users, autonomous vehicles, and automated driving systems; and to examine how best to achieve uniformity in roadway infrastructure to facilitate the safe deployment of autonomous vehicles and automated driving systems. The study conducted under subsection
(a)shall include recommendations to Congress relating to the matters studied under paragraphs
(1)and
(2)of that subsection. Before entering into an agreement under subsection (a), the Secretary shall provide an opportunity for public comment on the study proposal. If the Transportation Research Board enters into the agreement under subsection (a), to the maximum extent practicable, not later than 2 years after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall submit to Congress the study conducted under that subsection.
