For purposes of this Act, the following definitions shall apply: The term green building standards means standards to require use of sustainable design principles to reduce the use of nonrenewable resources, encourage energy-efficient construction and rehabilitation and the use of renewable energy resources, minimize the impact of development on the environment, and improve indoor air quality. The term HUD means the Department of Housing and Urban Development. The term HUD assistance means financial assistance that is awarded, competitively or noncompetitively, allocated by formula, or provided by HUD through loan insurance or guarantee.
The term nonresidential structures means only nonresidential structures that are appurtenant to single-family or multifamily housing residential structures, or those that are funded by the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development through the HUD Community Development Block Grant program. The term Secretary , unless otherwise specified, means the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development.
