The Secretary of Defense shall conduct a study on extending a parent’s level of TRICARE health coverage to the newborn child of the parent. In conducting the study under subsection (a), the Secretary shall, with respect to members of the Coast Guard, coordinate with the Secretary of the Department in which the Coast Guard is operating when it is not operating as a service in the Department of the Navy. In conducting the study under subsection (a), the Secretary shall study— the feasibility and the cost of automatically extending the parent’s level of TRICARE coverage to the newborn child for the remainder of the first year of the child’s life after the first 90 days; and the current notification system for parents to change their children’s health care plan during the first 90 days of the newborn’s life.
Not later than 120 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall submit to the congressional defense committees a report on the study conducted under subsection (a).
