Sec. 5217. Authorization of amounts for ice trials of icebreaker vessels

Of the amounts authorized for fiscal year 2018 under paragraphs
(1)and
(5)of section 2702 of title 14, United States Code, as amended by this Act, up to $3,000,000 is authorized for the Commandant of the Coast Guard to carry out ice trials of icebreaker vessels documented under section 12111 of title 46, United States Code. Ice trials referred to in subsection
(a)shall— assess the ability of an icebreaker vessel to carry out the missions of the Coast Guard enumerated in section 2 of title 14, United States Code; or conduct operational tests to produce information that could be used in the design and acquisition of icebreaker vessels by the Coast Guard to carry out such missions.
