Subsection
(a)of section 1004 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1991 ( Public Law 101–510 ; 10 U.S.C. 374 note) is amended by striking 2014 and inserting 2017 . Such section is further amended— by inserting or activities to counter transnational organized crime after counter-drug activities each place it appears; in subsection (a)(3), by inserting or responsibilities for countering transnational organized crime after counter-drug responsibilities ; and in subsection (b)(5), by inserting or counter-transnational organized crime after Counter-drug . Subsection (h)(2) of such section is amended by striking $500,000 and inserting $250,000 . Such section is further amended by adding at the end the following new subsection: In this section, the term transnational organized crime means self-perpetuating associations of individuals who operate transnationally for the purpose of obtaining power, influence, monetary, or commercial gains, wholly or in part by illegal means, while protecting their activities through a pattern of corruption or violence or through a transnational organization structure and the exploitation of transnational commerce or communication mechanisms. . The heading of such section is amended to read as follows: .
