The Commission may, upon application of any interested person or upon its own initiative, grant exemptions from the regulations in this part that it determines are authorized by law and will not endanger life or property or the common defense and security and are otherwise in the public interest. This section shall cease to have effect on January 8, 2027, unless the NRC determines that the cessation deadline should be extended to a date not more than 5 years in the future after offering the public an opportunity to provide input on the costs and benefits of this section and considering that input.
The NRC will publish a document in the Federal Register announcing its determination and revising or removing this section accordingly. [67 FR 20370, Apr. 24, 2002, as amended at 90 FR 55629, Dec. 3, 2025]
