The Commission may, upon application of any interested person or upon its own initiative, grant an exemption from the requirements of the regulations in this part if it determines the exemption is authorized by law and would not endanger life or property or the common defense and security and is otherwise in the public interest. This section shall cease to have effect on January 8, 2027, unless the NRC determines that the cessation deadline should be extended to a date not more than 5 years in the future after offering the public an opportunity to provide input on the costs and benefits of this section and considering that input.
The NRC will publish a document in the Federal Register announcing its determination and revising or removing this section accordingly. [62 FR 28963, May 28, 1997, as amended at 90 FR 55629, Dec. 3, 2025]
