Chap. LIV.— An Act making appropriations for the civil and diplomatic expenses of Government for the year eighteen hundred and thirty-eight.April 6, 1838. [Obsolete.] *Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,* That the following sums be, and the same are hereby, appropriated, to be paid out of any unappropriated money in the treasury, viz: For pay and mileage of the members of Congress and delegates, Pay and mileage of members ot Congress. five hundred and sixty-seven thousand six hundred and eighty dollars;
For pay of the officers and clerks of the Senate and House of Representatives, Pay of officers, &c., of Congress. forty thousand four hundred dollars; For stationery, fuel, printing, and all other contingent expenses of Contingent exp. of Senate. the Senate, fifty thousand dollars; For stationery, fuel, printing, and all other contingent expenses of Contingent expenses of Ho. Reps. the House of Representatives, two hundred and twenty-five thousand dollars; The two sums last mentioned to be applied to the payment of the Two last sums applicable only to ordinary exp. ordinary expenditures of the Senate and House of Representatives, severally, and to no other purpose.
For compensation to the President and Vice President of the United President, Vice President, and beads of departments. States, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Treasury, the Secretary of War, the Secretary of the Navy, and the Postmaster General, sixty thousand dollars; For salary of the secretary to sign patents for public lands, per act Secretary to sign patents for lands. 1833, ch. 91. of March second, eighteen hundred and thirty-three, one thousand five hundred dollars;
For clerks and messengers in the office of the Secretary of State, Off. Sec. For advertising, twenty-five thousand dollars;Advertising For mail bags, forty thousand dollars;Mail bags. For blanks, thirty-six thousand dollars;Blanks.
For mail locks and keys and stamps, nine thousand dollars;Mail locks, &c. For mail depredations and special agents, twelve thousand dollars;Mail depredations and special agents. For clerks for offices, one hundred and forty thousand dollars;Clerks. For miscellaneous, forty thousand dollars.Miscellaneous. *Provided,* That there shall exist in the President and in the Postmaster Proviso. General, the same power to transfer funds from one to another head of appropriation, between the appropriations above made for the service of the General Post Office, as exists in the President and any other head of an executive department to transfer funds appropriated under one head to the service of another, in any other branch of the public service.
Sec. 2. *And be it further enacted,* That the money arising from the Furniture for the President’s house. sale of the old furniture in the President’s house shall be applied to the purchase of new furniture for the same. Sec. 3. *And be it further enacted,* That the unexpended balances Unexpended balances for clerks in offices of surveyors gen’l. appropriated. of appropriations for compensation to the clerks in the offices of the surveyors general of public lands be, and the same are hereby, appropriated, in addition to the sums appropriated by this act for the same purpose.
