February 26, 1929. [[H. R. 4084](/us/bill/70/hr/4084).] [[Private, No. 408](/us/pvtl/70/408).] *Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled*, Lawton, Okla., fire of 1917. Payment to designated persons for losses caused by. That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized and directed to pay, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, the sum of $75,000 to the persons whose names appear below, as com pensation in full for loss of property destroyed by the fire on eptember 24, 1917, in the city of Lawton, Oklahoma, such loss having been the result of the inability of the fire department of the city of Lawton to control said fire because of lack of water, all available water for fire-fighting purposes having been appropriated and being used by the War Department in connection with the training of soldiers at Fort Sill and Camp Doniphan:

Wallis, $1,000; Mrs. E. C. Swisher, $959; D. D. *Proviso*. Investigation and adjustment of claims. Dean, $317; C. R. Simpson, $2,850.15: *Provided*, That before any of said claims are allowed and paid the Comptroller General of the United States shall make an investigation of each of said claims to determine the extent and amount of such loss and damage, and such claims shall be adjusted in amounts not in excess of the amounts set out herein and upon certificates issued to each said claimant by the said Comptroller General of the United States.
