CHAP. 52.— AN ACT To amend section thirty-six hundred and forty-six of the Revised Statutes of the United States as reenacted and amended by Act of February twenty-third, nineteen hundred and nine. March 21, 1916.[[H. R. 3636](/us/bill/64/hr/3636).][[Public, No. 37](/us/pl/64/37).] *Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,* That section thirty-six hundred Lost, etc., checks.and forty-six of the Revised Statutes be, and hereby is, amended to read as follows:
"“Sec. 3646. That whenever any original check is lost, stolen, or Duplicates of lost, etc., checks, may be issued.destroyed disbursing officers and agents of the United States are 38 R. S., sec. 3646, p. 717, amended. Vol. 35, p. 643.authorized, within three years from the date of such check, to issue a duplicate check, under such regulations in regard to its issue and payment, and upon the execution of such bond, with sureties, to indemnify the United States, and proof of loss of original check, as the *Provisos.* Post Office Department checks or warrants.Secretary of the Treasury shall prescribe: *Provided,* That whenever any original check or warrant of the Post Office Department has been lost, stolen, or destroyed the Postmaster General may authorize the issuance of a duplicate thereof, at any time within three years from the date of such original check or warrant, upon the execution by the owner thereof of such bond of indemnity as the Postmaster General Checks to employees, etc.may prescribe: *Provided further,* That when such original check or warrant does not exceed in amount the sum of $50 and the payee or owner is, at the date of the application, an officer or employee in the service of the Post Office Department, whether by contract, designation, or appointment, the Postmaster General may, in lieu of an indemnity bond, authorize the issuance of a duplicate check or warrant upon such an affidavit as he may prescribe, to be made before any postmaster by the payee or owner of an original check or warrant.”" Approved, March 21, 1916.
