CHAP. 297.— An Act To give the consent of the Congress to the construction of a bridge across the Mississippi River near and above the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, and for other purposes. August 8, 1916[[H. R. 16185](/us/bill/64/hr/16185)][[Public, No. 182](/us/pl/64/182)] *Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,* That the consent of CongressMississippi River.New Orleans, La., may bridge. is hereby granted to the city of New Orleans, a municipal corporation existing under the laws of the State of Louisiana, its successors and assigns, when authorized by the State of Louisiana, to construct, maintain, and operate a bridge and approaches thereto across the Mississippi River, at a point suitable to the interests of navigation, near and above the said city, in accordance with the provisions of an Act entitled “An Act to regulate the construction of bridges over navigable waters,” approved March twenty-third, nineteen hundred and six:
Provided, That subject to the provisions of this Act*Proviso*.Substitution of tunnel. the Secretary of War may permit the said city of New Orleans to construct a tunnel or tunnels under said river in lieu of the bridge herein authorized in accordance with the foregoing Act approved March twenty-third, nineteen hundred and six, so far as the same may be applicable. Sec. 2. That this Act shall be null and void unless the constructionTime for construction. of said bridge or tunnels is commenced within two years and completed within five years from the date of approval hereof.
Sec. 3. That the right to alter, amend, or repeal this Act is herebyAmendment. expressly reserved. Approved, August 8, 1916.
