CHAP. 314.— An Act Fixing the compensation of certain officials in the custom service, and for other purposes. March 4, 1909.[[H. R. 21003](/us/bill/70/hr/21003).][[Public, No. 343](/us/pl/70/343).] *Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled*, That the Secretary of theCustoms.Pay increased of officials, etc.R. S., sec. 2694-2746, pp. 529-533, amended.Laborers.Maximum. Treasury be, and he is hereby, authorized to increase and fix the compensation of laborers in the customs service, as he may think advisable, to a rate not exceeding eight hundred and forty dollars per annum.
Sec. 2. That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby,Inspectors. authorized to increase and fix the compensation of inspectors of customs, as he may think advisable, not to exceed in any case theMaximum. rate of six dollars per diem, and in all cases where the maximum compensation is paid no allowance shall be made for meals or other expenses incurred by inspectors when required to work at unusual hours. Sec. 3. That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby,Deputy collectors, assistant appraisers, etc. authorized to increase and fix the compensation of deputy collectors, assistant appraisers and examiners of merchandise, examiners of tea, and examiners and special examiners of drugs, in the customs service,Maximum. as he may think advisable, not to exceed in any case three thousand five hundred dollars per annum.
Sec. 4. That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby,Deputy naval officers, etc. authorized to increase and fix the compensation of deputy naval officers and deputy surveyors of customs, as he may think advisable, not to exceed in any case three thousand dollars per annum.Maximum. Sec. 5. That section twenty-seven hundred and forty-six of theR. S., sec. 2746, p. 533, amended. Revised Statutes of the United States be, and the same is hereby, amended so as to read as follows, to wit:
“Sec. 2746. An additional compensation of twenty-five per centumSan Francisco.Additional pay to appraisers, etc. may be continued, at the discretion of the Secretary of the Treasury, to the appraisers, deputy collectors, deputy surveyors, deputy naval officers, and weighers at the port of San Francisco: *Provided, however*,*Proviso.*Restriction. That the compensation so fixed shall not exceed the maximum amounts fixed by law.” Sec. 6. That the Secretary of the Treasury be, and he is hereby,Assistant weighers. authorized to increase and fix the compensation of assistant weighersMaximum per diem. in the customs service as he may think advisable, not to exceed in any case the rate of four dollars per diem.Treasurer of United States.Salary.
Sec. 7. That hereafter the salary of the Treasurer of the UnitedR. S.,sec. 301, p. 50, amended. States shall be eight thousand dollars ner annum. 1066 Sec. 8 That all laws and parts of laws inconsistent with this ActRepeal. are hereby repealed. Approved, March 4, 1909.
