CHAP. 67.— An Act To amend an Act entitled “An Act to amend section forty-one hundred and seventy-eight, Revised Statutes, in relation to the marking of vessels’ names at how and stern, and also to provide for marking the draft,” approved February twenty-first, eighteen hundred and ninety-one. January 20, 1897. *Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America, in Congress assembled*, That the Act entitled “An Act Shipping. Marking vessels’ names.
Vol. 28, p. 765.to amend section forty-one hundred and seventy-eight, Revised Statutes, in relation to the marking of vessels’ names at bow and stern, and also to provide for marking the draft,” approved February twenty-first, eighteen hundred and ninety-one, is hereby amended to read as follows: “That section forty-one hundred and seventy-eight of the Revised R. S., sec. 4178, p. 805, amended.Statutes be, and the same is hereby, amended to read entire as follows: " “‘Sec. 4178.
The name of every documented vessel of the United Name of vessels to be marked on bow and stern. States shall be marked upon each bow and upon the stern, and the home port shall also be marked upon the stern. These names shall be painted 492FIFTY-FOURTH CONGRESS. Sess. II. Chs. 67–69. 1897.or gilded, or consist of cut or carved or cast roman letters in light color on a dark ground, or in a dark color on a light ground, secured in place, and to be distinctly visible. The smallest letters used shall not be less in size than four inches.
If any such vessel shall be found without these names being so marked the owner or owners shall be liable to a Penalty. *Proviso.* Marking on bow.penalty of ten dollars for each name omitted: *Provided, however,* That the names on each bow may be marked within the year eighteen hundred and ninety-seven. Draft to be marked. “Sec. 2. That the draft of every registered vessel shall be marked upon the stem and stern post, in English feet or decimeters, in either arabic or roman numerals.
The bottom of each numeral shall indicate the draft to that line.”" Approved, January 20, 1897.
