31-4-14.4. Restriction of use of state trunk highways through highway work zones.

The secretary of the Department of Transportation, after consultation with the secretary of the Department of Public Safety, may restrict the use of any state trunk highway through a highway work zone by any vehicle or class of vehicle, if the restriction is necessary for the protection and safety of highway workers and the traveling public. Notice to the public of the restriction shall be given as provided in § 31-4-14.2 . Any person who fails to observe any sign, marker, warning, notice or direction, or barrier erected pursuant to this section shall be given a warning by the highway patrol or local law enforcement officer.
The warning shall direct the person driving the vehicle how to proceed out of and around the highway work zone. Any person who fails to comply with the warning is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor. No other penalty may be assessed for a violation of this section.
