39:3-27.33. Members of military reserve unit; special license plates

1. a. Upon the application of any person who is a resident of this State and who is an active member of a military reserve unit, as certified by the appropriate military authority, the Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission shall issue for the motor vehicle owned by the person special registration plates, of a design to be approved by the chief administrator and at a fee to be prescribed by the chief administrator, identifying the holder as a member of a military reserve unit, in addition to the registration number and other markings or identification otherwise prescribed by law.
b. A member of a military reserve unit who has completed at least six years of service with a military reserve unit shall not be required to surrender the registration plates issued pursuant to this section solely on the basis that the member's service with the military reserve unit has come to an end, provided that the member has been honorably discharged or discharged under general honorable conditions.
