Section 48. A person, officer, member or examining physician of any society who shall knowingly or willfully make any false or fraudulent statement or representation in or with reference to any application for membership, or in order to obtain money from or benefit in any society, shall be punished by a fine of not less than $100 nor more than $500 or by imprisonment in a house of correction for not less than 30 days or more than one year, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
A person willfully making a false statement of any material fact or thing in a sworn statement as to the death or disability of a certificate holder in any society for the purpose of procuring payment of a benefit in the certificate of such holder shall be guilty of perjury. A person who willfully makes any false statement in any verified report or declaration on oath required or authorized by this chapter shall be punished by a fine of not more than $5,000 or by imprisonment for not more than two and one-half years, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
