§463.1.1. Parish road use tax; Jefferson Parish
A.(1) In addition to the annual registration license provided for in R.S. 47:463, an annual parish road use tax of twenty dollars per automobile and twenty-five dollars per truck may be levied by the parish council of Jefferson Parish, and collected at the time the vehicle is registered or the registration is renewed, commencing with the registration period beginning January 1, 1998, subject to the approval of a majority of the electors of Jefferson Parish voting in an election held for that purpose.
(2)On vehicles purchased during the second year of the two-year registration period, the annual parish road use tax shall be twenty dollars per automobile and twenty-five dollars per truck.
B. The parish council of Jefferson Parish shall have the authority to seek the assistance of the Department of Public Safety and Corrections, office of motor vehicles, to collect the proceeds of such tax by entering into a contract with the vehicle commissioner. Pursuant to such contract the vehicle commissioner shall act as agent for Jefferson Parish in collection of such tax, and the tax shall be collected at the time the vehicle is registered and at the time of each subsequent renewal of the registration of the vehicle.
The vehicle commissioner shall withhold from any such tax so collected for Jefferson Parish one percent of the proceeds of the tax so collected, which shall be used by the commissioner to pay the cost of collecting and remitting the tax to Jefferson Parish.
