186A.090 Owner to secure proper vehicle identification number from department.

(1)The owner of a vehicle required to be titled or registered in this state which:
(a)Does not have a legitimate vehicle identification number as affixed by a
manufacturer regularly engaged in the original manufacture of the type vehicle
for which registration is sought, or in accordance with the law of this or
another state; or
(b)Has been built from parts;
shall, before making application for registration of the vehicle, apply to the
Department of Vehicle Regulation for issuance of a vehicle identification number
plate, which shall be affixed to the vehicle in the manner prescribed by
administrative regulations of the Department of Vehicle Regulation.
(2)The Department of Vehicle Regulation shall establish, in cooperation with the
Department of Kentucky State Police, regulations governing the form of application
required by this section, and may require inspection of the vehicle before a vehicle
identification number plate has been issued and after such plate has been affixed to
the vehicle.
