Sec. 50. Scope of practice. The scope of practice as a clinical perfusionist includes the following functions:

(1)the use of extracorporeal circulation, long-term cardiopulmonary support

techniques, including extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and associated therapeutic and diagnostic techniques;

(2)counterpulsation, ventricular assistance, autotransfusion, blood conservation

techniques, myocardial and organ preservation, extracorporeal life support, and isolated limb perfusion;

(3)blood management techniques, advanced life support, and other related functions; and

(4)in the performance of the acts described in items

(1)through

(3)of this Section:

(A)the administration of

(i)pharmacological and therapeutic agents and

(ii)blood

products or anesthetic agents through the extracorporeal circuit or through an intravenous line in conjunction with extracorporeal support, as ordered by and under the direct supervision of a physician licensed to practice medicine in all its branches;

(B)the performance and use of

(i)anticoagulation monitoring and analysis,

physiologic monitoring and analysis,

(iii)blood gas and chemistry monitoring and analysis,

(iv)hematologic monitoring and analysis,

(v)hypothermia,

(vi)hyperthermia,

(vii)hemoconcentration and hemodilution, and

(viii)cardiopulmonary hemodialysis; and

(C)the observation of signs and symptoms related to perfusion services, the

determination of whether the signs and symptoms exhibit abnormal characteristics, and the implementation of appropriate reporting, perfusion protocols or changes in or the initiation of emergency procedures.
