The election authority shall preserve and keep the voting machine or voting machines in repair, and shall have the custody thereof, and of the furniture and equipment of the polling place when not in use at an election. No person shall be employed or allowed to perform any mechanical services in connection with any voting machine which is used or to be used at any election or primary in which such person is a candidate.
