If the salary specified in Article 1 (commencing with Section 11550) for any particular position is less than the salary which the incumbent is receiving on the date when this chapter takes effect, he or she shall continue to receive the higher amount and the provisions of Article 1 (commencing with Section 11550) shall not become operative until a new appointment is made for the position.
