Subsection
(q)of section 1 of the State Department Basic Authorities Act of 1956 ( 22 U.S.C. 2651a ), as added by section 5114 and amended by section 5150 , is further amended by adding at the end the following: There shall be in the Department of State a Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, which shall perform such functions related to implementation of United States foreign policy to the Middle East and North Africa as the Under Secretary for Political Affairs may prescribe. The Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs shall be the head of the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. In this paragraph, the term Middle East and North Africa means the region of countries that the Secretary of State designates as within the responsibility of the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs. .
