Section 1 of the State Department Basic Authorities Act of 1956 ( 22 U.S.C. 2651a ) is amended by adding at the end the following: There shall be in the Department of State a Chief Medical Officer, to be appointed by the Secretary of State, who— shall lead the Office of Medical Services; and as required by section 904 of the Foreign Service Act of 1980 ( 22 U.S.C. 4084 ), shall be responsible to the Secretary, acting through the Under Secretary for Management, for matters relating to the clinical and mental health programs of the Department and all related activities, in accordance with the needs of the Department. .
