Title IV of the National Quantum Initiative Act ( 15 U.S.C. 8851 et seq. ) is amended by adding at the end the following new section: The Secretary of Energy (referred to in this section as the Secretary ) shall conduct research, development, and demonstration activities focused on the use of quantum information science, engineering, and technology, including through quantum applications and quantum computing, to enhance the resilience, security, and efficiency of the electric grid in the United States.
In carrying out subsection (a), the Secretary may conduct research in the following areas: Fault detection and prediction. Grid security and safety, including through post-quantum cryptography. Integrated grid planning. Grid optimization. Enhanced modeling. Energy storage. Energy market optimization. Any other area in which, in the determination of the Secretary, quantum information science, engineering, and technology can enhance the resilience, security, and efficiency of the electric grid in the United States.
To the extent practicable, the Secretary shall conduct research, development, and demonstration activities under subsection
(a)in cooperation, including through partnerships, as the Secretary determines appropriate, with members of relevant industries, National Laboratories, institutions of higher education, nonprofit organizations, and other relevant institutions, including research institutions, as determined by the Secretary. .
