Section 289 of the Immigration and Nationality Act ( 8 U.S.C. 1359 ) is amended— by inserting before
(a)Nothing ; by striking who possess at least 50 per centum of blood of the American Indian race. and inserting the following: “who— are members, or are eligible to become members, of a federally recognized Indian Tribe in the United States; or has Indian status in Canada through registration under the Indian Act (R.S.C., 1985, c. I–5); or holds membership in a self-governing First Nation in Canada. ; and by adding at the end the following: A person who is admitted to the United States pursuant to subsection
(a)shall have the status of a person lawfully admitted for permanent residence. .
