Sec. 625. Military to mariner enrollment at a State Maritime Academy

Section 51506 of title 46, United States Code, is amended— in subsection (a)(2), by inserting before the semicolon the following: , which shall include standards for a program described in subsection
(c); by redesignating subsection
(c)as subsection (d); and by inserting after subsection
(b)the following: A State maritime academy shall offer a program for eligible individuals described in paragraph
(2)through which the eligible individuals— complete a merchant marine officer preparation program approved by the Secretary, and the requirements for the issuance of a license under section 7101 of this title, in less than 3 years; and are not required to earn a baccalaureate or other degree from the State maritime academy. An eligible individual described in paragraph
(1)is an individual who— is an honorably discharged veteran of the Armed Forces; or is a member of the National Guard or Reserves with not less than 6 years of service; and has earned a baccalaureate degree from an institution of higher education (as defined in section 102 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 ( 20 U.S.C. 1002 )) before entering the State maritime academy program. .
