Section 1701 of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 ( 34 U.S.C. 10381 ) is amended— in subsection (b)— in paragraph (1), by adding before the semicolon the following or to provide bonuses for the recruitment and retention of law enforcement officers or career law enforcement officers ; and in paragraph (2), by adding before the semicolon the following or to provide bonuses for the recruitment and retention of law enforcement officers or career law enforcement officers ; and by adding at the end the following:
In awarding a grant under this part, the Attorney General may permit an applicant for such a grant to amend a submitted application in lieu of creating a new application, for consideration for funding for up to five subsequent years after the original application was submitted for consideration for funding if such applicant was not awarded funding. . Section 1709 of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 ( 34 U.S.C. 10389 ) is amended by adding at the end the following: law enforcement officer shall have the meaning given such term in section 1204(9). submitted application means an application submitted for a grant awarded pursuant to paragraphs
(1)and
(2)of section 1701(b). .
