Section 503 of title 23, United States Code, is amended— in subsection (a)(2), by striking under section 508 and inserting under section 6503 of title 49 ; and in subsection (c)(4)— in subparagraph (A), by striking and congestion management ; in subparagraph (B)— by redesignating clauses
(i)through
(viii)as clauses
(vii)through (xiv), respectively; by inserting before clause
(vii)(as so redesignated) the following: improve the mobility of people and goods; reduce congestion; promote safety; improve the durability and extend the life of transportation infrastructure; preserve the environment; preserve the existing transportation system; ; and in clause
(xiv)(as so redesignated), by inserting vehicle-to-pedestrian, after vehicle-to-infrastructure, ; in subparagraph (C)(ii)— in subclause (I), by striking and congestion management ; by striking subclause (II); by redesignating subclauses
(III)through
(V)as subclauses
(II)through (IV), respectively; and in subclause
(II)(as so redesignated), by striking efficiency and reduce traffic congestion ; in subparagraph (E)— in the matter preceding clause (i), by striking and congestion management ; in clause (viii), by striking or at the end; in clause (ix), by striking the period at the end and inserting ; or ; and by adding at the end the following: advanced transportation technologies, in accordance with the research areas described in section 6503 of title 49. ; in subparagraph (I)(i), by striking 2016 through 2020 and inserting 2022 through 2026 ; and in subparagraph (N)— in the matter preceding clause (i), by striking , the following definitions apply ; by striking clause
(ii)and inserting the following: The term advanced transportation technology means any technology that improves the efficiency, durability, sustainability, safety, or state of good repair of a surface transportation system. ; and in clause (iii), in the matter preceding subclause (I), by striking a any and inserting any .
