Section 238 of the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 ( Public Law 115–232 ; 10 U.S.C. note prec. 4061) is amended— by amending subsection
(c)to read as follows: In addition to designating an official under subsection (b), the Secretary of Defense shall assign to appropriate officials within the Department of Defense roles and responsibilities relating to the research, development, prototyping, testing, procurement of, requirements for, and operational use of artificial intelligence technologies. The officials assigned roles and responsibilities under paragraph
(1)shall include— the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering; the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment; one or more officials in each military department; officials of appropriate Defense Agencies; and such other officials as the Secretary of Defense determines appropriate. ; in subsection
(e)in the second sentence, by striking Director of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center and inserting the official designated under subsection
(b); and by striking subsection (h). Section 4092 of title 10, United States Code, is amended— by amending paragraph
