Sec. 8143. Monitoring and assessment program for saline lakes in the Great Basin

The Secretary is authorized to carry out a program (referred to in this subsection as the program ) to monitor and assess the hydrology of saline lake ecosystems in the Great Basin, including the Great Salt Lake, to inform and support Federal and non-Federal management and conservation activities to benefit those ecosystems. The Secretary shall coordinate implementation of the program with relevant— Federal and State agencies; Indian Tribes; local governments; and nonprofit organizations. The Secretary is authorized to use contracts, cooperative agreements, or any other authorized means to work with institutions of higher education and with entities described in subsection
(b)to implement the program. Not later than 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall submit to Congress an update on the progress of the Secretary in carrying out the program. In carrying out the program, the Secretary may use available studies, information, literature, or data on the Great Basin region published by relevant Federal, State, Tribal, or local governmental entities. There is authorized to be appropriated to carry out this section $10,000,000.
