In addition to amounts otherwise available, there is appropriated to the Secretary for fiscal year 2022, out of any money in the Treasury not otherwise appropriated, $5,000,000, to remain available until expended, for the purpose described in subsection (b). The Secretary, after consultation with appropriate medical and other health professional societies and palliative care and hospice stakeholders, shall use amounts appropriated by subsection
(a)to award grants or contracts to public and nonprofit private entities to disseminate information to inform patients, families, caregivers, direct care workers, and health professionals about the benefits of palliative care throughout the continuum of care for patients with serious or life-threatening illness. Such awareness campaign shall include— information, resources, communication, and education materials about palliative care for patients and families facing serious or life-threatening illnesses; information regarding hospice and palliative care services, including information on how such services may— incorporate age-friendly, patient-centered, and family-centered support throughout the continuum of care for serious and life-threatening illness; anticipate, prevent, and treat pain; optimize quality of life; and facilitate and support the goals and values of patients and families; materials that explain the role of professionals trained in hospice and palliative care in providing team-based care for patients and families throughout the continuum of care for serious or life-threatening illness; and materials for specific populations, including patients with serious or life-threatening illness who are among medically underserved populations (as defined in section 330(b)(3) of the Public Health Service Act ( 42 U.S.C. 254b(b)(3) ) and families of such patients or health professionals serving medically underserved populations.
