Unless otherwise specified, in this division: The term apprenticeship means an apprenticeship registered under the Act of August 16, 1937 (commonly known as the National Apprenticeship Act ; 50 Stat. 664, chapter 663; 29 U.S.C. 50 et seq. ) that meets the standards of subpart A of part 29 and part 30 of title 29, Code of Federal Regulations. The term Director means the Director of the National Science Foundation. The term Directorate means the Directorate for Technology and Innovation established under section 2102.
The term emerging research institution means an institution of higher education with an established undergraduate or graduate program that has, on average for the 3 years prior to an application for an award under this division, received less than $50,000,000 in Federal research funding. The term EPSCoR means the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research under section 113 of the National Science Foundation Authorization Act of 1988 ( 42 U.S.C. 1862g ). The term Foundation means the National Science Foundation.
The term historically Black college or university has the meaning given the term part B institution in section 322 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 ( 20 U.S.C. 1061 ). The term institution of higher education has the meaning given the term in section 101 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 ( 20 U.S.C. 1001 ). The term key technology focus areas means the areas included on the most recent list under section 2005. The term minority-serving institution means an institution described in section 371(a) of the Higher Education Act of 1965 ( 20 U.S.C. 1067q(a) ).
The term National Laboratory , without respect to capitalization, has the meaning given the term in section 2 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 ( 42 U.S.C. 15801 ). The term STEM means the academic and professional disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, including computer science.
