It is the sense of Congress that— the United States and the Republic of Palau have a strong relationship based on strengthening regional security, ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific, and protecting fisheries from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing; and Congress is receptive to the Republic of Palau’s request to the United States to establish a regular United States military presence in Palau for purposes of Palau’s defense and encourages the Department of Defense to review such request.
Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall provide a report and briefing to the appropriate congressional committees on the Department of Defense’s plans to review the Republic of Palau’s request to the United States to establish a regular United States military presence in Palau and any planned military construction associated with such military presence. In this subsection, the term appropriate congressional committees means— the congressional defense committees; and the Committee on Foreign Relations of the Senate and the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives.
