Sec. 5109. Transportation equity research program

The Secretary of Transportation shall carry out a transportation equity research program for research and demonstration activities that focus on the impacts that surface transportation planning, investment, and operations have on low-income populations, minority populations, and other underserved populations that may be dependent on public transportation. Such activities shall include research on surface transportation equity issues, the development of strategies to advance economic and community development in public transportation-dependent populations, and the development of training programs that promote the employment of low-income populations, minority populations, and other underserved populations on Federal-aid transportation projects constructed in their communities.
There is authorized to be appropriated to carry out this section $8,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2023 through 2026. Amounts made available to the Secretary to carry out this section shall remain available for a period of 3 years beginning after the last day of the fiscal year for which the amounts are authorized. chapter 35 of title 44 Any survey, questionnaire, or interview that the Secretary determines to be necessary to carry out the reporting or research requirements relating to this section, including customer satisfaction assessments, shall not be subject to chapter 35 of title 44, United States Code.
