Not later than one year after the date of enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall conduct a study on how to most efficiently track overdoses by type of drug, including fentanyl. Upon completion of the study under subsection (a), and taking into consideration the results of such study, the Secretary shall award grants to States to facilitate the collection of data with respect to fentanyl-involved overdoses. As a condition on receipt of a grant under this subsection, an applicant shall agree to share the data collected pursuant to the grant with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In awarding grants under this subsection, the Secretary shall give preference to applicants whose grant proposals demonstrate the greatest need for collecting timely and accurate data on overdoses.
