Section 621 of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 ( Public Law 109–58 ; 119 Stat. 782) is amended— by striking Section and inserting the following: Section ; and by adding at the end the following: Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Secretary shall expand the light water reactor sustainability program of the Department, to the maximum extent practicable— to ensure the achievement of maximum benefits from existing nuclear generation; to accommodate the increase in applications for nuclear power plant license renewals expected as of the date of enactment of this subsection; to enable the continued operation of existing nuclear power plants through technology development; to improve the performance and reduce the operation and maintenance costs of nuclear power plants; and to promote the use of high-performance computing to simulate nuclear reactor processes.
There is authorized to be appropriated to the Secretary to carry out the program under this subsection $60,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2020 through 2029. .
