The Secretary of Agriculture, in consultation with the Secretary of Health and Human Services, shall enter into an agreement with the National Academy of Sciences, under which the National Academy agrees to produce an analysis of current scientific findings to determine the links between human health and soil health by— reviewing existing research on the connections between the human microbiome and soil microbiome; identifying linkages between soil management practices and the nutrient density of foods for human consumption; exploring potential impact of increasing soil organic matter across the agricultural and food value chain; determining how to best leverage healthy soil management practices to maximize benefits and minimize adverse impacts on human health; and highlighting areas for future research.
The agreement under subsection
(a)shall include a requirement that the National Academy of Sciences, not later than 2 years after the date of the enactment of this Act, submit to the Committee on Agriculture of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry of the Senate a report on the results of the study conducted pursuant to subsection (a).
