Sec. 12608. Wildfire smoke emissions modeling and forecasting improvement program

The Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in collaboration with other Federal agencies and such academic entities as the Administrator considers appropriate, shall maintain a program to improve wildfire smoke emissions modeling and develop smoke forecasts. The goal of the program under subsection
(a)shall be to develop and extend accurate wildfire smoke forecasts and impact-based decision support services in order to reduce loss of life, injury, and damage to the economy with a focus on— improving modeling of wildfire smoke emissions, transport, mixing, and chemical transformations through advanced modeling approaches; developing and disseminating smoke forecasts; and incorporating risk communication research in developing smoke forecasts and fire weather warning products. There is authorized to be appropriated to the Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to carry out this section $20,000,000 for each of fiscal years 2021 through 2025.
