Sec. 12607. Wildfire hazard severity mapping for electric transmission and distribution infrastructure

Not later than 2 years after the date of the enactment of this section, the Secretary of Energy shall— use the most recent LANDFIRE data to generate a geospatial map for the conterminous United States that depicts wildfire risk to electric utilities that— manage electric transmission infrastructure or rights-of-ways on public lands; and maintain equipment that is at risk of igniting or being impacted by wildland fire; and disseminate the information generated under paragraph
(1)in an appropriate format for use by electric utilities in order to— improve understanding of wildfire risk; identify areas and assets at the highest risk; prioritize infrastructure maintenance and vegetation management; identify opportunities for energy storage and microgrid projects; and develop plans for regular and emergency access to manage and mitigate wildfire risk. In carrying out subsection (a), the Secretary of Energy shall consult with— the Secretary of Agriculture, acting through the Chief of the Forest Service; the Secretary of the Interior; the Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency; other appropriate Federal agencies; States; relevant colleges, universities, and institutions of higher education with relevant expertise; and other entities, as appropriate. In this section, the term electric utility means— a rural electric cooperative; a political subdivision of a State, such as a municipally owned electric utility, or any agency, authority, corporation, or instrumentality of one or more State political subdivisions; and an investor-owned utility.
