The Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration, in coordination with the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, shall conduct a review of current and planned research on the use of advanced aircraft technologies, innovative materials, alternative fuels, additive manufacturing, and novel aircraft designs, to increase aircraft fuel efficiency. The review conducted under paragraph
(1)shall include summaries of projects and missions to examine— the effectiveness of such technologies, materials, fuels, and aircraft designs to enhance fuel efficiency and aerodynamic performance, and reduce drag, weight, noise, and fuel consumption; and the potential for novel flight pattern planning and communications systems to reduce aircraft taxiing and airport circling. The review conducted under paragraph
(1)shall identify potential opportunities for additional research and development, public or private, to increase aircraft fuel efficiency. Not later than 1 year after the date of enactment of this Act, the Administrator of the Federal Aviation Administration shall submit to the appropriate committees of Congress a report containing the results of the review conducted under subsection (a).
