Sec. 1272. NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence

Of the amounts authorized to be appropriated by this Act for fiscal year 2018 for support of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (in this section referred to as NATO ) operations, as specified in the funding tables in division D, not more than $5,000,000 may be obligated or expended for the purposes described in subsection (b). The Secretary of Defense shall provide funds for the NATO Strategic Communications Center of Excellence (in this section referred to as the Center ) to— enhance the capability, cooperation, and information sharing among NATO, NATO member nations, and partners, with respect to strategic communications and information operations; and facilitate education, research and development, lessons learned, and consultation in strategic communications and information operations.
Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall certify to the Committees on Armed Services of the House of Representatives and the Senate that the Secretary has assigned executive agent responsibility for the Center to an appropriate organization within the Department of Defense, and detail the steps being undertaken to strengthen the role of Center in fostering strategic communications and information operations within NATO.
The Secretary of Defense shall periodically brief the committees listed in paragraph
(2)on the efforts of the Department of Defense to strengthen the role of the Center in fostering strategic communications and information operations within NATO. The committees listed in this paragraph are the following: The Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the House of Representatives. The Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Foreign Relations of the Senate.
