Sec. 1646. Briefing on cyber applications of blockchain technology

Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense, in consultation with the heads of such other departments and agencies of the Federal Government as the Secretary considers appropriate, shall provide to the appropriate committees of Congress a briefing on the cyber applications of blockchain technology. The briefing under subsection
(a)shall include— a description of potential offensive and defensive cyber applications of blockchain technology and other distributed database technologies; an assessment of efforts by foreign powers, extremist organizations, and criminal networks to utilize such technologies; an assessment of the use or planned use of such technologies by the Federal Government and critical infrastructure networks; and an assessment of the vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure networks to cyber attacks. The briefing under subsection
(a)shall be provided in unclassified form, but may include a classified supplement. In this section, the term appropriate committees of Congress means— the Committee on Armed Services, the Select Committee on Intelligence, the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, and the Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs of the Senate; and the Committee on Armed Services, the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the Committee on Financial Services, and the Committee on Homeland Security of the House of Representatives.
