Sec. 1610. Pilot program on commercial weather data

Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall establish a pilot program to assess the viability of commercial satellite weather data to support requirements of the Department of Defense. Of the funds authorized to be appropriated by this Act or otherwise made available for fiscal year 2017 for the Secretary of Defense to carry out the pilot program under subsection (a), not more than $3,000,000 may be obligated or expended to carry out such pilot program by purchasing and evaluating commercial weather data that meets the standards and specifications set by the Department of Defense.
The Secretary may carry out the pilot program under subsection
(a)for a period not exceeding one year. Not later than 60 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of Defense shall provide a briefing to the Committees on Armed Services of the House of Representatives and the Senate (and to any other congressional defense committee upon request) demonstrating how the Secretary plans to implement the pilot program under subsection (a). Not later than 90 days after the pilot program under subsection
(a)is completed, the Secretary shall provide a briefing to the Committees on Armed Services of the House of Representatives and the Senate (and to any other congressional defense committee upon request) on the utility, cost, and other considerations regarding the purchase of commercial satellite weather data to support the requirements of the Department of Defense.
