The Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration shall— publish in the Federal Register or on the Department of Transportation's public website all petitions for regulatory action submitted; prioritize stakeholder petitions based on the likelihood of providing safety improvements; formally respond to each petition by indicating whether the Administrator will accept, deny, or further review, the petition not later than 180 days after the date the petition is petition is published under paragraph (1); prioritize resulting actions consistent with an action's potential to reduce crashes, improve enforcement, and reduce unnecessary burdens; and publish, and update as necessary, on the Department of Transportation's public website an inventory of each petition described in paragraph (1), including any applicable disposition information for that petition.
In this section, the term petition means a request for new regulations, regulatory interpretations or clarifications, or retrospective review of regulations to eliminate or modify obsolete, ineffective, or overly burdensome rules.
