Section 50 of title 14, United States Code, is amended— in subsection (a)— by striking paragraph
(1)and inserting the following new paragraph (1): The President may— designate, within the Coast Guard, no more than 5 positions of importance and responsibility that shall be held by officers who, while so serving, shall have the grade of vice admiral, with the pay and allowances of that grade, and shall perform such duties as the Commandant may prescribe (and if the President designates 5 such positions, 1 position shall be the Chief of Staff of the Coast Guard); and designate within the Executive branch, other than within the Coast Guard, positions of importance and responsibility that shall be held by officers who, while so serving, shall have the grade of vice admiral, with the pay and allowances of that grade. ; and in paragraph (3)(A), by striking under paragraph
(1)and inserting under paragraph (1)(A) ; and in subsection (b)(2)— in subparagraph (B), by striking and at the end; by redesignating subparagraph
(C)as subparagraph (D); and by inserting after subparagraph
(B)the following: at the discretion of the Secretary, while awaiting orders after being relieved from the position, beginning on the day the officer is relieved from the position, but not for more than 60 days; and .
