Sec. 750. Department of Defense studies on preventing the diversion of opioid medications

With respect to programs of the Department of Defense that dispense drugs to patients, the Secretary of Defense (referred to in this section as the Secretary ) shall study the feasibility, the effectiveness in preventing the diversion of opioid medications, and the cost-effectiveness of— requiring that such programs, in appropriate cases, dispense opioid medications in vials using affordable technologies designed to prevent access to the medications by anyone other than the intended patient, such as a vial with a locking-cap closure mechanism; and the Secretary providing education on the risks of opioid medications to individuals for whom such medications are prescribed, and to their families, with special consideration given to raising awareness among adolescents on such risks.
In conducting the studies under subsection (a), the Secretary shall seek feedback (on a confidential basis when appropriate) from the individuals and entities involved in the studies. Not later than one year after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary shall submit to the Congress a report on the results of the studies conducted under subsection (a).
