Sec. 234. Report on commercial-off-the-shelf wide-area surveillance systems for Army tactical unmanned aerial systems

Not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary of the Army shall submit to the congressional defense committees a report that contains the findings of a market survey and assessment of commercial-off-the-shelf wide-area surveillance sensors operationally suitable for insertion into the tactical unmanned aerial systems of the Army. The market survey and assessment contained in the report under subsection
(a)shall include— specific details regarding the capabilities of current and commercial-off-the-shelf wide-area surveillance sensors that are, or could be, used on tactical unmanned aerial systems of the Army, including— daytime and nighttime monitoring coverage; video resolution outputs; bandwidth requirements; activity-based intelligence and forensic capabilities; simultaneous region of interest monitoring capability; interoperability with other sensors and subsystems currently used on such tactical unmanned aerial systems; sensor weight; sensor cost; frame rates; on-board processing capabilities; and any other factors the Secretary considers relevant; an assessment of the effect on such tactical unmanned aerial systems due to the insertion of commercial-off-the-shelf wide-area surveillance sensors; and recommendations on the advisability and feasibility to upgrade or enhance wide-area surveillance sensors of such tactical unmanned aerial systems, as considered appropriate by the Secretary.
